Due to a water line failure along Saunders Road in Troy, Montgomery County Public Utilities has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for customers in the Springdale Drive, Pekin Road, and Saunders Road areas. The advisory follows outages and periods of low pressure that can increase the risk of back-siphoning and potential bacterial contamination.
The North Carolina Division of Water Resources recommends that once water service is restored, residents should boil all water intended for human consumption—such as drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, and food preparation—for at least one minute. Alternatively, bottled water may be used. “Vigorous boiling for 1 minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present,” according to the advisory.
Montgomery County Public Utilities is monitoring the situation and will update or lift the advisory when water service and quality are fully restored and testing confirms safety. Discoloration or air in the system may occur after service interruptions but does not pose a health risk; running a faucet can help clear these issues.

In related community news, data from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction shows that college readiness among students in Montgomery County school districts remains a concern. For example, only 15.9% of 195 senior students taking the reading portion of the ACT were considered ready for college during the 2022-23 school year. In science, just 9.8% of 255 juniors met college readiness standards on the ACT during the same period (source). Similar results were observed in other subjects: 25.1% in junior reading (source), 12.2% in junior math (source), 19.5% in senior English (source), and 26.3% in junior English (source).
Montgomery County officials continue to address both public utility concerns and educational outcomes within their jurisdiction.
