In Washington, D.C., U.S. Representative Richard Hudson announced the winners of the 2024 Congressional App Challenge for North Carolina’s 9th District during Computer Science Education Week.

“The Congressional App Challenge is a great opportunity for our region’s middle and high school students to showcase their creativity and computer skills on the national level,” said Rep. Hudson. “Congratulations to this year’s winners from Jack Britt High School and North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics for their innovative app design, and thank you to all of our region’s students who participated in this year’s competition.”

The winning app, titled “Guide Dog,” was created by Gabrielle Humphrey from Jack Britt High School and Sophie Zhu from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Both students hail from Fayetteville. The app aims to assist blind or visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings.

The Congressional App Challenge was initiated by the U.S. House of Representatives to promote student innovation in computer science and STEM fields. It encourages students nationwide to engage with coding through practical experience by developing an app.

Rep. Hudson’s selection committee, composed of technology professionals, evaluated submissions earlier this fall to determine the winner. The selected app will be showcased on both the House.gov website and the CongressionalAppChallenge.us website.
