Montgomery County has declared a State of Emergency ahead of an expected winter storm and announced the opening of an emergency shelter for residents.
The shelter will be located at Page Street Elementary School, 897 Page Street, Troy, NC 27371. It is scheduled to open at noon on Saturday, January 24, 2026, and will remain open until further notice.
Officials are urging residents to monitor the county’s official channels for updates on weather conditions, road closures, shelter status, and emergency services. The statement from Montgomery County reads: “Please continue to monitor Montgomery County’s official communications for updates on weather conditions, road closures, shelter operations, and emergency services. Stay safe, Montgomery County.”
Montgomery County schools have reported varied levels of college readiness among students in recent assessments. In the 2022-23 school year, data showed that out of 195 senior students taking the reading portion of the ACT in local districts, about 16 percent were considered ready for college (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). For juniors taking the science portion of the ACT during the same period, roughly 10 percent demonstrated college readiness (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). Additionally, about a quarter of junior students met college-ready standards in reading (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/), while just over one in ten juniors were considered ready in math (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/). English results showed that nearly 20 percent of seniors (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/) and about a quarter of juniors (https://www.dpi.nc.gov/) achieved scores indicating they were prepared for college-level work.
