Town of Aberdeen issued the following announcement on July 13.
Scammers are now using the COVID-19 pandemic to scam money and information from unsuspecting victims. The most recent scam is based on contact tracing. The scams appear as text messages (like the one pictured) or phone calls seeking money, Social Security numbers, bank account numbers or credit card numbers. NONE of this information is needed for contact tracing!!
If you receive a text message or phone call about contact tracing DO NOT give any personal information or bank account information. And do not click on any links in the text messages. Just hang up or don't respond!
A legitimate contact tracer affiliated with the NCDHHS will only ask information about medical symptoms and anyone you had close contact with.
If you think you are a victim of fraud or attempted fraud involving COVID-19, call the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721 or email disaster@leo.gov.
