The Emergency Meals-to-You (EMTY) program is sending more than 12,000 children living in rural areas of North Carolina free meals shipped directly to their homes, the Carolina Hunger Initiative said in mid-July.

The program is being used to fight child hunger during the COVID-19 crisis and has been operating since May, the Carolina Hunger Initiative said in a July 14 news release. The program provides weekday breakfasts and lunches to school children who were receiving those meals through the National School Lunch Program at a free or discounted price.

“We’ve seen an incredible mobilization of school nutrition staff, community organizations, volunteers, restaurants, and others working to make sure kids have the nutrition they need during this emergency,” Carolina Hunger Initiative Director Lou Anne Crumpler said in the news release. “The EMTY program will expand the number of families getting support even further. We want to use every method available to make sure kids do not go hungry.”

EMTY ships each child 10 breakfasts and 10 lunches every two weeks. The program is available through Saturday, Aug. 15. The first meals were delivered in May when the coronavirus was at its then-peak.
