Sandhills Community College issued the following announcement on Jan. 18.

Whether you’re a reader, want to flex your artistic muscles, learn more about photography and film, or discover new cooking techniques, there’s something for you this February in Sandhills Community College Continuing Education’s Center for Creative Living.

Arts and Crafts and Hobbies

In “Spring Book Club,” enjoy stimulating discussion with other bibliophiles as participants read and engage in conversation about one book each month. The club will meet from 2-4 p.m. Books discussed will be: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens on Friday, Feb. 4, The Island of Sea Women: A Novel, by Lisa See on Friday, March 18, Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America by Gilbert King on Friday, April 8, Home Fire: A Novel, by Kamila Shamsie, and The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel, by Garth Stein.

“Spring Book Club” is free, but registration is required.

“More Watercolor” is for those who want to brush up on their watercolor skills. Little or limited experience is required. Some knowledge of drawing is helpful. Demonstrations of skills, techniques and targeted assignments will help build skills and confidence for student generated compositions.

Held on Thursdays, Feb. 3-24 from 1-3 p.m., “More Watercolor” will cost $90.

“Learn to Draw” is designed to gently immerse beginners into drawing and serve as a refresher course for artists who want to brush up on fundamentals. Students will develop and grow skills required while improving both technical and artistic understanding. Explore illustration, design, photography, and more. Class topics include composition, subject matter, shading techniques, and perspective.

Held on Tuesdays, Feb. 15-April 12 from 9-11 a.m., “Learn to Draw” will cost $75.

In “Creative Card Making,” students will learn how to create cards in this new class for beginners and casual or avid crafters. Learn how to properly use inks, stamps, and papers. Become inspired with creative layouts, designer series paper, embellishments, and tools. Watercolor and textured embossing folders will be utilized. Learn various techniques as you make three to five 3-5 cards each session.

Held on Wednesdays, Feb. 2-March 23 from 3-5 p.m., “Creative Card Making,” will cost $60.

“Landscape Irrigation” will teach basic irrigation practices for homeowners and beyond. Learn the principles of a home irrigation system and basic troubleshooting skills. Students will learn how to check, repair and troubleshoot while discussing landscape needs and scheduling for the Sandhills region. Water conservation and micro-climate identification, as site requirements differ.

Held on Tuesdays, Feb. 1-22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., “Landscape Irrigation” will cost $75.

“Quilting for Beginners” will introduce participants to the basics of quilting. Fabric and pattern selection, cutting, piecing, and sewing, quilting, and binding your own quilt will be taught. Various techniques and methods such as patchwork and paper piecing, applique, curves, and others will be demonstrated. Students can progress at their own pace. Students will need a working sewing machine, basic sewing supplies, thread, and fabric.

Held on Wednesdays, Feb. 2-April 6 from 5:30-8 p.m., “Quilting for Beginners” will cost $115.

Lecture Series

“The Justification of Taxation and Just Taxes” is a philosophical approach to taxation that will touch on crucial topics. Learn the foundation for the government’s right to tax, what type of tax is fair compared to other types of taxes (flat tax vs. a progressive income tax) and how much is ones ‘fair share.’ Participants will discuss whether one should be allowed to refuse to pay tax if they disagree with how the funds are used, if tax planning is morally acceptable or should there be limitations, and do taxpayers have rights. This course will help participants in better understanding some of the fundamental issues surrounding taxation and help evaluate tax proposals by politicians, not from a technical but rather from a principled perspective.

Held on Wednesdays, Feb. 23-March 23 from 2-3:30 p.m., “The Justification of Taxation and Just Taxes” will cost $65.

Languages

“Spanish Beginning Conversation” will provide the foundation to asking and responding to simple questions using basic vocabulary. Engage in easy conversations and communicate in social, business, and travel situations. Students will study a variety of basic written materials and master writing simple sentences needed in everyday life.

Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 15-March 15 from 3-5 p.m., “Spanish Beginning Conversation” will cost $75 plus the cost of text.

In “German Beginning Conversation,” students will develop basic beginner vocabulary and idioms used in everyday situations. Engage in easy conversations and communicate in social, business, and travel situations. Class will cover a variety of basic written materials and learn to write simple sentences needed in everyday life. Worksheets and helpful literature are provided. No text required.

Held on Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 21-March 21 from 6-8 p.m., “German Beginning Conversation” will cost $75.

Photography

In “Digital Photography Fundamentals,” students will take their photography skills from good to great. Students will learn to understand their camera controls and how to put a little of themselves into each photo. Classes will be lectures, demonstrations, critiques, and discussions.

Held on Tuesdays, Feb. 22-April 12 from 6-9 p.m., “Digital Photography Fundamentals” will cost $75.

Culinary Club

In “Introduction to Knife Skills,” students will explore a culinary kit and dive into the fascinating uses of each piece inside. Students will learn handling and cutting techniques to ensure safety and efficiency with kitchen tools. Quick potato hash with onion peppers bacon and cheddar cheese with our amazing knife cuts.

Held on Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 5-7 p.m., “Introduction to Knife Skills” will cost $75. Another class will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 5-7 p.m.

In “Advanced Knife Skills,” students will master how to break down and filet a fish and break down a whole chicken. They’ll learn the technique of deboning a chicken leg, how to know when we need a flexible or rigid boning knife and how to use these tools with precision. Baked fish filet to be prepared by students.

Held on Tuesday, Feb. 15 from 5-7 p.m. “Advanced Knife Skills” will cost $75.

In “BBQ” students will get their hands dirty and learn a little art of the south, Pork shoulders and Pork butts smoking low and slow. Hand shredded and of course smothered in our own North Carolina signature BBQ sauce.

Held on Monday, Feb. 7 from 5-7 p.m., “BBQ” will cost $75.

In “Garde Manger” students will dive into the art of the cold kitchen and learn how to create cold soups and dishes to blow guests away. Participants will learn how to make a beautiful cucumber and mango soup, plus explore evening gazpachos.

Held on Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 5-7 p.m., “Garde Manger” will cost $75.

In “Easy Desserts,” students will create an elegant fruit galette and decadent chocolate lava cake. Held on Friday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., this class will cost $150.

In “Molded Chocolates,” students will make their own delicious chocolates. Learn how to mold, fill, and decorate chocolates. Held on Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 1-5 p.m., “Molded Chocolates” will cost $150.

In “Fruit Tartlets,” students will learn how to make pie dough and a pie filling with mascarpone cheese and powder sugar filling topped with fresh cut fruit and finished with glaze and powdered sugar. Held on Friday, Feb. 11 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., class will cost $75.

In “Spring Desserts,” students will learn how to make professional-looking desserts. Fruit Tart and Raspberry Chocolate Puffs in quick, easy steps. Students will receive several easy dessert recipes that will set you on your way to being your own pastry chef.

Held on Friday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., “Spring Desserts” will cost $150.

In “Mini Sprinkles Cake,” students will learn how to make mini sprinkles cakes from a sheet cake cut with a circle cutter. Participants will stack, fill, and decorate the small cake with a smear of frosting and decorate the top and boarder with sprinkles.

Held on Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., “Mini Sprinkles Cake” will cost $75.

In “Herbs and Spices,” let Chef Matthews share his love of flavors, mixing, matching, pairing, and the wonderful world of herbs and spices. We will take a look at local produce and learn how we can bring layers of flavor to your garden. Meats and vegetables will be explored and we will decide which flavors work well together. Bites and nibbles will be prepared by students.

Held on Monday, Feb. 28 from 5-7 p.m., “Herbs and Spices” will cost $75.

Life Skills Series

In “Lunch” We will teach how to make tomato soup with freshly made croutons, stuffed tomato with couscous, and a personal pizza made with fresh dough from scratch.

Held on Friday, Feb. 18 from 5-8 p.m., “Lunch” will cost $75.

Spring Semester

Sandhills is offering free tuition for all for the second 8-week session of curriculum classes which begin on March 14. Classes will be offered in-person, online, and in hybrid class formats, take only eight weeks to complete, and award full college credits. See www.sandhills/eight for all information.

Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester.

CCP Classes for High School Students

Local high school students can take classes at SCC when a junior and senior. Those successfully completing four CCP classes qualify for the Sandhills Promise.
