The Kindergartner classes at Mount Gilead Elementary School learned about "Go" foods today, which includes the Grains group. The Grains group includes grains, breads, rolls, flatbreads, hot and cold cereals , pasta, cooked grains such as rice, oats and barley, and crackers. MyPlate reminds us to make half of our grains whole. Whole grains are healthier because they contain higher amounts of vitamins, minerals, and fiber than refined grains, primarily because the bran of the kernel has not been removed.
These kids learned that "Go" foods help us run, jump and play with our friends all day! We learned about the different types of grains, sang and danced to keep our bodies active and tried a delicious blueberry/strawberry yogurt parfait - which the kids really enjoyed. Some kids even wanted more after they finished.
To make this healthy treat, simply drop some blueberries and strawberries (or another fruit) into the bottom of the dish, spoon out some low-fat vanilla yogurt on top of the fruit, and then sprinkle some crushed up graham crackers on top of that. Simple, delicious and nutritious!
