SCC Fire Academy to Begin in July

Capture

The Fire Academy at Sandhills Community College is now accepting applications for the fall semester class that begins on July 12.

At the end of this full-time program, cadets will have earned Firefighter I/II, Hazardous Material Ops, Technical Rescuer and Emergency Vehicle Driver. Students will also take EMT-Basic as part of the program and, upon successful completion, will be eligible to take the state certification exam.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in or observe advanced training with surrounding departments, many of who provide support, equipment use, and accommodations for students when needed. Full- or part-time job opportunities are available at most local fire departments.

With a few exceptions for specialized training, classes are from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays for this six-month course of study that ends in December.

Recent graduates from the Fire Academy include high school graduates beginning a career and those who have been in the workforce and plan to change careers. Many students formerly served in the military and upon separating, train to become firefighters. Others have served in a volunteer capacity for local fire departments and decide to make it a career.

The Fire Academy offers a thorough course of study at our state-of-the-art Larry R. Caddell Public Training Center, which includes a residential burn building, a four-story drill tower, control tower, burn and auto extraction pits, and other components. Instructors are highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated.

The Larry R. Caddell Public Safety Training Center is at 333 Niagara-Carthage Road in Carthage. A 360° virtual tour of the facility is available on the college’s website. Go to www.sandhills.edu and click the “Campus Tour” link under Admissions and then the link to the center.

Registration

Those interested in enrolling in the Fire Academy should request information and an application packet from Amy Caliri, Coordinator for Program Support Operations at (910) 695-3998 or caliria@sandhills.edu.

Current volunteer firefighters may be eligible for a fee waiver based on their membership with a local, city, county, or state fire department.

Fall Semester

The 16-week curriculum/college credit semester and first eight-week session begin on August 15. The second eight-week session begins on October 12. Students can take a mix of full-semester classes alongside eight-week sessions.

Apply to attend SCC from the link at www.sandhills.edu and apply for financial aid if assistance is needed. To receive funds in hand to pay fall semester tuition, information should be submitted by July 14. After that date, applications will still be accepted, but completion by July 14 assures that the FAFSA will be processed in time.

Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester, with most of the skills and technical courses starting in August.

CCP Classes for High School Students

Local high school students can take classes at SCC when a junior and senior. Those successfully completing four CCP classes qualify for the Sandhills Promise. This program offers two full years of classes immediately following high school graduation at no cost. For all information, go to: www.sandhills.edu/admissions/sandhills-promise.
