It’s a wrap for the first week of STEM Camp for 2nd-7th grade MCS students. Two STEM camps are being held this summer at Southern Middle School. The theme this year is Ecology in the Sandhills, and activities focused on the use of coding to create virtual environments, developing environmental engineering skills by analyzing burrowing animal behavior, and the field of entomology utilizing apps to identify insects and observe insect behavior. In addition, campers worked as forensic scientists who had to solve the case of missing woodland creatures by dissecting owl pellets in "CSI: Critter Scene Investigation."
Special guest speakers included Jesse Wimberley, Coordinator of the Sandhills Prescribed Burn Association; Dillon Dunn, Genetic Test Coordinator for Weyerhaeuser Timber; and Zach Lunn, Park Ranger with Weymouth Woods.
The week wrapped with a tour of Weymouth Woods led by Park Rangers Zach and Sam. Campers learned more about the ecology of the Sandhills area, and talked about different flora and fauna ecological relationships.
MCS STEM Camp week two is now underway.
