WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC) on June 14 released the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 1640, the Save Our Gas Stoves Act. Rep. Hudson sponsored H.R. 1640, which will stop the Department of Energy from dictating the type of cooktop appliance Americans use in their homes.

"Washington Democrats' intrusions into the homes of Americans are not for public safety, but government control,” said Rep. Hudson. "President Biden and House Democrats aren’t focused on the issues impacting our nation, but instead focused on what kind of stove you are using. The problem with the federal government's rush to green policies is that my democratic colleagues forget what natural gas has been able to do—provide reliability, lower energy costs, and reduce emissions. House Republicans are fighting to protect and preserve your family’s way of life."

Natural gas is a safe, reliable, and affordable energy source that is used by over 187 million Americans. Homes with natural gas appliances save over $1,000 per year and emit 22% less C02 compared to all-electric homes. Forcing Americans to switch to more expensive alternatives would only further increase costs for families.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, an estimated 590,000 homes in North Carolina use gas stoves, and natural gas is the main fuel source for heating in 24% of homes across the state.

The Save Our Gas Stoves Act will:

  • Prohibit the Biden Administration from implementing, enforcing, or finalizing their harmful, costly proposed rule on energy conservation standards for consumer conventional cooking products, or any similar rule.
  • Prohibit the Biden Administration from issuing an energy conservation standard for kitchen ranges or ovens unless they can determine the standard is not likely to result in the unavailability in the US of a type of product based on what type of fuel the product consumes.

To further protect Americans' freedom to purchase affordable appliances, yesterday Rep. Hudson voted for and the House also passed the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act. This legislation will stop the Consumer Product Safety Commission from broadly banning gas stoves or imposing any standard that would be a de facto ban by making gas stoves unaffordable.
