A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Moore County Election Department in North Carolina regarding pre-election voting machine test reports on October 30, 2024. The request was made by Pinehurst Today, a media organization committed to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our quest for transparency and accountability, we sought access to specific records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. The requested documents pertain to the pre-election testing of voting machines used in the county's electoral process.
Specifically, we asked for the following details in PDF format:
- The date of each test
- The manufacturer of each machine
- Each machine's model number
- The status of each machine (whether it passed or failed the test)
As members of the media, we are deeply involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to such public records is essential for us at Pinehurst Today to fulfill our professional responsibilities, which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals. We eagerly await a response from the Moore County Election Department and will continue our pursuit of truth and transparency in all matters concerning local governance.
