The Aberdeen Town Board decided that the Parks and Recreation building will not be used for early voting this fall at its April 27 session.
Notice of the decision has been sent to Moore County. Mayor Robbie Farrell agreed with Town Manager Paul Sabiston that Aberdeen needs the facility for many other activities that would have to be moved or canceled to accommodate voters.
“That’s a pretty high-use facility,” Sabiston said, as reported by the Sand Hills Sentinel. “It’s very difficult to operate if that room is out of commission for three weeks during the fall."
Key to the board’s decision was the availability of other facilities where early voting can take place. The American Legion building is another facility that could be used for early voting, the board said.
Early voting is scheduled from the middle of October until a few days prior to the Nov. 3 election.
Commissioner Teressa Beavers said she was pleased that there are alternative sites that can be used for early voting.
“We know it’s going to be a big election,” Beavers said, as reported by the Sand Hills Sentinel.
