Southern Pines issued the following announcement on July 30.
The Southern Pines Police Department is excited to inform you that we will be offering two sessions of our Women’s Self-Defense classes this year. The classes are FREE, and will be held in the Southern Pines Police Department’s C. Michael Haney Community Room on August 25th from 6-8pm and September 8th from 6-8pm. The women’s self-defense class focuses on teaching some basic self-defense techniques and how to properly apply those techniques in practical scenarios. Sergeant Brian Edwards and Captain Robert Heaton will be the instructors for the class. Sergeant Edwards is the Sergeant for the Investigations Division and is the fitness and wellness instructor for the department. Captain Heaton is the Operations Captain for the department. Both instructors are certified in Subject Control and Arrest Techniques (SCAT).
If you are interested in participating, we ask that you preregister by calling Community Services Coordinator Bill List at 910-692-2732 ext. 2826, between the hours of 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. If calling off hours, or if you get a voicemail, please leave your name and phone number so that we can return your call.
Things you need to know about participation in the class:
- Participants need to be 18 years of age or older.
- Class size is limited to 20, so please call and register as soon as possible.
- Recommended clothing is athletic apparel (athletic pants are preferable).
- A waiver needs to be completed prior to participation in the class (waivers will be available at the class, so please arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete the waiver).
