Whispering Pines approved the $4.3 million budget would increase the tax rate 5 cents after remaining steady for more than 10 years.
Local policymakers OK'd the Fiscal Year 2020-2021 budget at the June 10 council meeting, The Pilot reported on June 12.
The tax rate increase means property owners will pay 42 cents for every $100 of land value, which will help support fixing the Thagard Lake Dam, the Pilot reported.
“The initial project is to put a Band-Aid on Thagard dam in order to give us 20 more years on the existing dam,” Village Manager Rich Lambdin, The Pilot reported. "There are a lot of assumptions, a lot of unknowns, a lot of things in there, but it is an outline of a plan that future councils can adapt and change as we move along.”
Repairs to the Thagard Dam are anticipated to cost $250,000, The Pilot reported. The village is also planning improvements to the Pine Lake and Fly Rod Lake dams.
"I believe this budget is a true reflection of what need in Whispering Pines," Councilman Andy Conway said, The Pilot reported. "I feel very good about the work everyone has done and I'm very proud of what's been put on paper."
